Masters of innovation and entertainment when it comes to slot games, Thunderkick bring us a new addition themed around traditional Russian dolls Matryoshkas.
The game is named after the oldest doll in the set which represents a grandmother, Babushka. Babushkas is a 5×3 game that comes with 17 paylines that brings traditional Russian motifs into the picture.
The stunning graphics and likable characters of Russian dolls will win you over at first sight while novelties such as Symbol Upgrade and Wipe Win will definitely be enough to come back to this game.
Swedish slots developer Thunderkick are a young company which is making their way in the iGaming industry with their innovative, creative and humorous design.
They are synonyms for innovation and what makes them stick out from the crowd of developers is their entertaining approach to game design which sees them toying with traditional slot features redesigning reel behavior. Unlike in any other slots, you can expect to encounter the likes of singing skulls, floating fruit, electrocuted birds, etc.
How to Play It
Babushkas is set on a 5×3 grid with 17 fixed paylines, but don’t jump to the conclusion that this is yet another typical slot. Several unique features are enough to make the difference.
Seven Babushkas and a bear appear across the reel while you play. The Babushkas range from the baby to the oldest and wisest granny and as such they have their category from 6 to 0, respectively.
Interestingly, the highest category pays the least and vice versa. If you wonder what are these categories for, you will get the explanation in the next section in the part about Symbol Upgrade option.
Wild symbol is a bear, and it has three variations: Scare Bear, Dance Bear and Charm Bear. The Bear appears on the third reel only and can replace any symbol. The funny looking bear dancing and jumping and sending hearts will be your favourite character in this game.
Now we come to the most interesting part where Thunderkick’s innovativeness steps on the scene.
First of all, we will explain the Symbol Upgrade feature. Like we previously mentioned the dolls come in categories which can be upgraded to the higher-paying category but only if it extends the matching combination or forms a new one.
That leads us to the highlight in the special feature department – Wipe Win. This option is activated when all 15 symbols are the same and then they will have an additional upgrade.
Wild symbol is another perk represented by an ornamented egg, which must have a star on it and that is when the egg cracks open and one of the Bears comes out.
Scare Bear can upgrade your lowest paying Matryoshkas from 1-3 categories depending on its size, whereas the Charm Bear upgrades all symbols only once. Finally the Dance Bear unlocks the Free Spins feature, where you get 7 free spins with a Wild stacked on reel three in each and every spin.
You can set your stake within the range from $0.10 to $100 and wait for the upgrades or even better yet one of the funny-looking bears. The payouts in the main game are pretty low, while RTP is not so high either, standing at under 96%.
On top of that, the jackpot is only 390x total stake which is low compared to other slots from Thunderkick. But if you use all the free spins and upgrades, as well as one special upgrade of category 0. Actually 0 category upgrades to ghost and cashes in a big reward.
We must say that we can’t wait to see what Thunderkick prepares new slots and the Babushkas do not disappoint. Excellent theme with just enough authentic detail and music to entertain and amuse you.
Though design is something that Thunderkick excels at, we must say that the new features Wipe Win and Symbol Upgrade are our favourite parts of this slot.
However, the game does not offer huge payouts or high variance so it might not suit high-rollers, but it is definitely worth checking out.
